Los ojos de mi hermana (My sister’s eyes) is a collaborative project between my sister, Andrea, and me. We grew up together in Nicaragua, but after she emigrated to Germany, our lives took different paths. When we reunited in Germany ten years later, we realized that photography had remained a bridge between us as we got to know each other again as adult women. It preserved our bond and became a quiet ritual of connection. This project reflects on the emotional role photography has played in our relationship, exploring how not only the photographic archive we began back in 2006 has held memory, intimacy, and meaning, but the very at of photographing her has become a bonding ritual for us. The book includes not only my photographs but also Andrea’s voice and her perspective on being seen and how photography has shaped our connection and reconnection. This is not just a story of siblings, migration, or distance. It’s an invitation to reflect on how photography functions emotionally in our closest relationships, beyond the resulting images. The act of photography itself becomes a way of binding us together.
